Can I use a conventional fire alarm panel in a new building?

SparkProof

No. Chapter 8 permits only listed and approved addressable fire detection and alarm systems in new construction — conventional systems are acceptable only where they already exist. Every building must have an automatic addressable fire detection and alarm system.

Why Fire Code questions cost you hours

1,300+ pages, 20 chapters

The clause you need sits somewhere between emergency lighting in Chapter 6 and smart monitoring in Chapter 16. Scrolling a PDF on a site walk is not a workflow.

“Listed” is a trap

Products need Civil Defence listing — overseas certificates alone do not qualify. A conventional panel or an unlisted cable can fail the final inspection after it is already installed.

No occupancy without DCD clearance

Chapter 18: nobody occupies the building before final commissioning and clearance. Every missing test report or certificate delays the opening — and your payment.

This is what a SparkProof answer looks like

Real questions from site, answered with the exact requirement and the chapter behind it.

How far can a manual call point be from any point on the escape route?

Travel distance to the nearest manual call point must not exceed 61 m — reduced to 25 m or 16 m in limited-mobility areas or where rapid fire development is likely. Mount at about 1.2 m above floor level, within 1.5 m of exit door openings, and the alarm signal must follow within 10 seconds.

How long must emergency lighting run on battery?

Type 10 / Class 3: the emergency supply must cut in within 10 seconds of mains failure and the batteries must last 3 hours (180 minutes), with at least 1.1 lux at floor level along the egress path. Maintenance is codified too — a 30-second mains-failure test every month and a full 3-hour discharge test annually.

Which cable is accepted for fire alarm circuits?

Circuits that must keep working during a fire need fire-rated cable certified for 120 minutes to EN 50200, UL 2196, BS 8434-2, BS 7629-1 or BS 6387 — plus Civil Defence listing. Ordinary “flame retardant” cable does not qualify.
